Plan for safety

Pet safety

The Freedom Project, initiated by Dogs Trust in 2004, provides a vital service for individuals fleeing domestic abuse by offering temporary foster care for their dogs.

The Freedom Project allows survivors to access safe accommodation without the worry of leaving their pets behind, which is a significant concern given that many refuges do not accept pets.
This service is crucial because there is a notable link between domestic abuse and the threat or actual abuse towards pets, used by perpetrators to exert control over their victims. The service is completely free and confidential.

How the The Freedom Project helps:

Temporary foster care

Dogs are placed in the loving homes of volunteer foster carers, ensuring they are well-cared for in the absence of their owners. This care includes food, toys, bedding, and necessary veterinary treatment, all provided by the project.

Reunification

When it is safe, and the owners have secured a stable situation, the project facilitates the reunion of the pets with their owners, allowing them to start a new chapter of their lives together.

Support for owners and pets

By ensuring the safety of pets, the Freedom Project helps reduce the emotional burden on owners attempting to escape abusive environments. Knowing their beloved pets are safe eases their transition into new beginnings.

It's free

The Freedom Project offers a completely free service for the dogs of domestic abuse survivors. All costs associated with the foster care are covered, including veterinary care, food, and other necessities such as a collar, lead, toys, treats, poo bags, and a comfortable bed for your dog. This ensures that there is no financial burden on you during this challenging time.

Confidentiality guaranteed

Your safety and privacy are paramount. The Freedom Project maintains strict confidentiality over your details; they are not shared with the foster carer or anyone else. They place dogs in foster homes that are safely distanced from their previous locations to avoid any possibility of recognition, ensuring your dog’s and your anonymity.

Expert support

The team comprises professional, all-female staff experienced in assisting survivors of domestic abuse. They collaborate closely with specialist domestic abuse services to tailor support for both you and your dog, ensuring that you receive comprehensive help tailored to your journey towards safety and freedom.

Regular updates

The Freedom Project understand the emotional challenge of being separated from your pet. While direct visits to the foster home are not possible, they bridge this gap by providing regular updates and photos of your dog. These updates ensure that you can stay connected and reassured about your dog’s well-being during this separation.
